			 Litigation Costs

			Litigation is expensive, particularly
in intellectual property cases.  The American Intellectual
Property Law Association reports that the average patent case
through discovery (i.e., just prior to trial) costs both parties in excess of $1,000,000.
Depending upon the amount at stake and the financial position of the
parties, some lawsuits fully warrant such expense.  But other
lawsuits require a much more strategic approach, one where the cost
of litigation matters to the party, and actions in the lawsuit must
be assessed to determine whether the value in the lawsuit warrants
			the expense.

			Given the high costs of
intellectual property lawsuits, often the smartest money spent is
money to avoid an intellectual property claim from being brought
			against you.
